Tamata is a 43-foot cutter rigged sloop. She was built in 1992 by Med Marine in South Africa and is solidly designed for open ocean sailing. Her integral keel design, solid below-water fiberglass construction, skeg-hung rudder, 110 gallon fuel and 90 gallon water capacities, and slab reefing main made her a top choice for safely carrying us from Rhode Island to Western Australia.
At time of purchase in 2012, she was sail-able but not quite livable. We quickly turned her interior around, replacing the worn floorboards with glossy teak and holly. We also upgraded a few key things up above. We replaced the neglected teak deck with nonskid, installed solar panels, converted the roller furling staysail to a removable inner forestay and completed extensive electronic work. Finally in 2014, after nearly two years of improvements and two winter haul outs, our departure date was clearly on the horizon and we were ready to take the long way to the other side of the globe.
